If you keep these concepts in mind, I think they will make sense. Baffles in the tank can only do so much if they actually allow fuel to flow toward the pick-up. As also noted above, if the fuel pick-up is in one end of the tank, driving up or down a hill may take the actual fuel to the other end of the tank away from the pick-up. Even if you have a gallon or so left, the fuel may not be deep enough to draw the fuel. The bottom is somewhat flat, so it requires a reasonable volume to keep a vertical depth of fuel in the tank from which the fuel pick-up can draw. However, if you think about it, the 26-gallon (100 liter) fuel tank isn't shaped like a funnel where it's tiny at the bottom so you can get the last drop out. As others noted above, it does serve to help cool the in-tank fuel pump, and there's is also a slight issue of debris in the bottom of the tank that accumulates from many, many tank fillings (although arguably less of an issue than in years past). My recommendation is to not plan on using that last 5 gallon reserve. There are some issues with the Sprinter fuel tank that are common with any other tank of liquid fuel, regardless of whether diesel or gasoline.
